The Schleswig-Holstein regional league was played for the 26th time in the 1972/73 season and formed the substructure of the second-rate Regionalliga Nord until the 1973/74 season. The two first-placed teams were allowed to take part in the promotion round to the second-class Regionalliga Nord, the teams in the last two places had to relegate to the association league.

Compared to the 1971/72 season , the composition of the league changed as follows: No team was promoted to the Regionalliga Nord, while no team from Schleswig-Holstein was relegated from the Regionalliga Nord. The two relegated DGF Flensborg and VfL Oldesloe had left the national league and were replaced by the two promoted Eutin 08 (return after 20 years) and TuS Gaarden (for the first time in the national league).

Season course

The championship and thus participation in the promotion round was secured for the first time in Flensburg 08. BSC Brunsbüttel was also allowed to take part in second place. Both missed promotion to the Regionalliga Nord. TuS Gaarden had to leave the national league after one season, SC Elmenhorst after two seasons.

The Büdelsdorfer TSV qualified third for the German amateur championship in 1973 . There he prevailed against BBC Südost and SpVg Frechen 20 , but was eliminated in the semifinals against the amateur team of 1. FC Kaiserslautern .
