The Schleswig-Holstein Association League was held for the 39th time in the 1985/86 season and formed the substructure of the third-class Oberliga Nord. The two first-placed teams were allowed to take part in the promotion round to the Oberliga Nord. The teams in the last two places had to relegate to the national league.

Compared to the 1984/85 season , the composition of the league changed as follows: No team was promoted to the Oberliga Nord, while no team from Schleswig-Holstein was relegated from the Oberliga Nord. The two relegated members had left the association league and were replaced by the two promoted TSB Flensburg and VfL Kellinghusen (both for the first time in the highest amateur league in Schleswig-Holstein).

Season course

Itzehoer SV secured the championship and participation in the promotion round. Heider SV was also allowed to take part in second place. Both ended their groups in last place and had to give way to SV Atlas Delmenhorst and SVG Göttingen 07 . NTSV Strand 08 had to leave the association league after eleven years, BSC Brunsbüttel after nine seasons.
