The TSV Westerland (full name: . Gymnastics and sports club Westerland 1883 eV ) is a sports club from Westerland on the island Sylt . The former soccer department played for ten years in the amateur league Schleswig-Holstein and took part in the DFB Cup once.

history

On November 27, 1883, 15 members of the volunteer fire brigade founded the men's gymnastics club in Westerland . This merged in 1929 with the 1st Sylt football club founded on December 23, 1919 to form today's TSV Westerland. In 1952, the FC Schwarz-Gelb Keitum joined the club. Only after the opening of the Hindenburgdamm could the Sylt football players take part in games with the teams from the mainland.

The sporting upswing began after the Second World War . Initially, TSV Westerland played in the district class North or 2nd Amateur League North. After a renewed descent into the district league in 1966, a support group was set up by local business people. At the same time, professional clubs such as Hamburger SV , Werder Bremen and Hertha BSC were regularly invited to friendly matches in Westerland. The first team was strengthened with the income. The direct ascent was achieved as early as 1967. On the last day of the match SV Enge-Sande was defeated 26-0. As third of the following season the TSV qualified for the newly created association league . With one point ahead of Borussia Kiel , the Westerlanders made it through to the third-class national league.

In 1970 TSV Westerland won the SHFV Cup with a 2-0 win over Merkur Hademarschen and qualified for the first main round of the DFB Cup. The Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund was drawn as an opponent. First there were problems with the venue, as the Dortmund refused to Westerland Grand Place to play and the turf at the newly built stadium Sylt was not play again. Finally, the game was played in the Grenzlandstadion in Leck . In front of more than 13,000 spectators, Dortmund won the game 4-0. A special train was deployed from Westerland , while 400 TSV trailers were brought to the venue by ship from the island of Föhr .

With two points behind the Rendsburger TSV , the Westerlanders were runner-up in the Schleswig-Holstein regional league in the 1970/71 season and thus qualified for the promotion round to the Northern Regionalliga . Since the grass in the Sylt Stadium was still not playable, TSV had to play its home games in Niebüll . The only victory of the round was achieved at home against VfL Pinneberg . The remaining games against the SV Bremen police , SV Union Salzgitter and in Pinneberg were all lost.

In 1973 TSV Westerland won the SHFV Cup again. Two years later, as third, the Regionalliga promotion round was just missed. Until 1987, the TSV Westerland held in the now Verbandsliga Schleswig-Holstein, and in 1991 rose from the state league. In 1998 the relegation from the district league followed. On February 12, 2002, the football departments of TSV Westerland, TSV Tinnum , TSV Morsum and Sportfreunde List merged to form the Sylt 2002 team , whose first team was promoted back to the Nordfriesland district league in 2015 - in partnership with SC Norddörfer .
