Niebüll ( Danish Nibøl , North Frisian Naibel ) is a town and climatic health resort located in the district of North Friesland in Schleswig-Holstein . From 1920 to 1970 Niebüll was the capital and city of the district of Südtondern , and since 2008 it has been the seat of the South Tondern office .

geography

Niebüll is located in the middle of the marshland at around three meters above sea level on a Geest island called Kornkoog in the agriculturally usable part. The Geestrand is about five kilometers to the northeast, the North Sea twelve kilometers to the west ( Dagebüll ). Districts or settlements in Niebüll are Deezbüll (Danish Dedsbøl , Frisian Deesbel ) Deezbüll Castle, Langstoft (Frisian Lung Scales ) Uhlebüll (Danish Ullebøl , Frisian Ülbel ), Gath (Danish Gade , Frisian GaAs ) and Tegelwang (Danish Teglvang ).

Niebüll is a sub-center with functions of a middle center . In the western outskirts of the city there is a Wehle that was created around 1600 after a dike breach and is used as a natural swimming pool .

history

In the 14th century there were two parishes in today's urban area , Deezbüll, whose Apostle Church from this time still exists, and Langsumtoft. Both places belong to the Bökingharde . Langsumtoft was so badly damaged in the Second Marcellus Flood in 1362 that the place was abandoned shortly after 1400. The residents settled around today's Christ Church. In the liber censualis episcopi Slewicensis ordered by the Schleswig bishop in 1436 , Nigebul (Niebüll; German for "New Settlement" ) was listed for the first time next to Dedesbul (Deezbüll).

The Burchardi flood in 1634 claimed 50 lives. During the Thirty Years' War , imperial troops holed up near Deezbülleck, where they were driven out by the Danes in 1629. In 1643 the Swedes occupied the country. The Danish-Swedish War of 1658–1660 and the hostilities of 1713 during the Great Northern War hit the population worse than the Thirty Years' War .

Although the population was economically very bad after wars and bad harvests, today's Niebüller Christ Church was built in 1729. 30 years later, 1551 people lived in 386 houses in Niebüll.

Until the German-Danish War in 1864, the place and parish belonged to Bökingharde in the Tondern Office (Tønder Amt) within the Duchy of Schleswig , which had been a Danish fief. In 1867 Niebüll became part of the newly created Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein .

In 1885 the Niebüller Creditverein was founded.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the city had a rather village character, but then developed into a central location, especially as a traffic junction to the North Frisian islands and Halligen . The opening of the Marschbahn in 1887, which established a connection from Hamburg to the North Sea coast, was accompanied by an increased settlement of merchants. In 1895 Niebüll and not the Lindholm railway junction, which is located a little to the south, received a branch line to Dagebüll . The Hindenburg dam , which has been connecting the island of Sylt with the mainland by rail since 1927 , promoted the development of the urban character.

With the cession of the northern part of the district of Tondern to Denmark in 1920 , Niebüll became the main district of the new district of Südtondern . In 1950 the neighboring town of Deezbüll was incorporated. On April 1, 1960 Niebüll received city rights . In 1970 the district of Südtondern and the districts of Eiderstedt and Husum merged to form the new district of North Friesland with the district town of Husum , and Niebüll lost its status as a district town.

From October 1, 2005, the city of Niebüll formed an administrative partnership with the office of Wiedingharde , for which it led the administrative business. On January 1, 2008, Niebüll gave up the freedom of office and formed with the municipality of Leck and the municipalities of the offices of Bökingharde , Karrharde , Süderlügum and Wiedingharde the office of Südtondern with the administrative seat of Niebüll.

Place names

Niebüll, Danish Nibøl , lies on the edge of the historic Danish and Frisian settlement area and means "new settlement" (Danish -bøl (North Fr. -bel , dt. -Büll , cf. Old Norse nȳbœli for a newly listed settlement or farm)). Deezbüll ( Dedsbøl ) refers to a given name and means, for example, settlement of Dedi .

coat of arms

The coat of arms and flag were approved on August 10, 1961.

Blazon : “Quartered in gold and blue, covered with a continuous anchor cross, also quartered in gold and red. 1 a golden, single-masted ship with a sail, 2 and 3 two blue bars each, 4 a golden plow iron. "

The complicated but attractive coat of arms presents the city of Niebüll in several ways: The anchor cross refers to the history of the place, which was determined by both Christian culture and seafaring. The squaring of the coat of arms and the cross refers to the traditional four-part division of larger communities, which is specifically given here in the composition of the city from the districts of Niebüll and Deezbüll and their division into a north and a south part. Deezbüll has been incorporated into Niebüll since 1950. The stripes in the second and third field indicate the medieval land division as the basis of the rural economy. The ploughshare and sailing ship are taken from the old image seal of the Bökingharde, to which the villages of Niebüll and Deezbüll also belonged. Niebüll was the central place of this old administrative and judicial district. The ploughshare also represents the majority of the population, past and present, who belong to the agricultural profession. The ship is not only a symbol of trade and the seafaring industry, but also reminds of the time when Niebüll lay directly on the North Sea and in particular the population of the former municipality of Deezbüll had their source of income in shipping.

The coat of arms was designed by the Brunsbüttel heraldist Willy "Horsa" Lippert .

flag

In the leech the city arms without a shield; the flying part is divided by blue and gold, with two blue bars inside.
