history
Neukirchen was first mentioned in 1231 in the Waldemar-Erdbuch as a church village. The St. John's Church was built shortly before on an old terp as a late Romanesque brick building. A little later, it was given an early Gothic vault based on the model of the Riber Cathedral . In addition to the remains of various medieval wall paintings, the church has a baptismal font, which is perhaps even older than the church, a representation of Christ enthroned in the midst of the apostles from the 14th century, a late Gothic carved altar from the 16th century and a pulpit from the 17th century . The wooden bell tower dates from 1731.
When the Wiedingharde was dyed in 1436, when the so-called Golden Ring was built , the village on the terps was left out. It was only when the Gotteskoog was dyed in 1566 that permanent protection from the sea was achieved.
At the time it was part of the entire Danish state , Neukirchen was the capital of the parish of the same name and administratively part of the Wiedingharde within the Tønder Amt . After the German-Danish War in 1864, the place became part of Prussia in 1867 . From 1889 to 1967, Neukirchen was the administrative seat of the district or the Neukirchen office and then until September 30, 2005 of the Wiedingharde office .

coat of arms
Blazon : "Under a red shield head that ends with a golden bar at the bottom, inside a right-turned golden moon between two six-pointed golden stars in blue a single-masted golden sailing ship with a square sail, the keel, rudder and side sword partially disappearing under the waterline."
The stars and the crescent moon are taken from the Wiedingharde coat of arms. The golden bar stands for the "Golden Ring", the dike of the Wiedingharder Alten Kooges, which divides the municipality. The sailing ship is a stylized “Hemsenboot”, which for a long time was the main means of transport in the Gotteskoog. The colors are traditionally North Frisian with gold, red and blue.
traffic
The Schleswig-Holstein state road 6 runs through Neukirchen from the Danish border to Ost-Bordelum to the federal road 5 .
Culture
Emil Nolde
Emil Nolde built a residential building with a studio and exhibition rooms on a terp, which he - like the garden - designed himself and which he called "Seebüll". He lived and worked in this building from 1927 until his death in 1956. After his death, Seebüll was converted into the Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde Foundation and - as stipulated in Nolde's will - used as a museum. The house and garden are largely unchanged.
Skandaløs Festival
Since 2011, the Skandaløs , a music and art festival, has been held every second year in August at the Hüllenoft-Tief bathing lake .
Trivia
Neukirchen is also known in the media for the fact that its area code corresponds to the number of the telephone system of the Berlin police, which means that regular police communication including emergency calls from Berlin arrives in town.
