About this picture

Nieblum ( Danish : Niblum , North Frisian : Njiblem ) is a municipality on the island of Föhr in northwestern Schleswig-Holstein . It belongs to the district of North Friesland and, in addition to Nieblum, also consists of Goting , an independent municipality with 106 inhabitants until 1970.

geography

Nieblum is located in the south of the island of Föhr, about halfway between the west and east side of the island. The Goting district to the west belongs to Nieblum and was an independent municipality until 1970. In the far east at the Wyk airfield is the Greveling district. The bathing beach, which begins at Wyker Südstrand , also runs to Goting . Goting includes the Gotingkliff, which is several meters high.

The water depths at Nieblumer and Gotinger Strand are relatively low, so that large parts of the tidal flats fall dry when the tide is low .

history

The church of Nieblum in 1895

Many of the old Frisian houses once belonged to captains who earned their fortune as seafarers, often on Dutch whaling ships . This was hard and dangerous work, many of which never got home alive. The gravestones in the cemetery around the "Friesendom" St. Johannis , built in the 13th century, the largest of the three island churches, bear witness to this .

The southern part of Nieblum and Goting belonged to the villages that were part of Harde Westerland Föhr , a royal enclave of Denmark , which existed until 1864 .

The northern part of the village Nieblum, on the other hand, belonged to Osterland Föhr and thus to the Duchy of Schleswig .

In 1970 the previously independent municipality of Goting was incorporated into Nieblum.

politics

In the local elections in 2018 , the Nieblum voter community (NWG) won all nine seats.
