Location of the municipality of Poppenbüll in the district of North Friesland | ||
Poppenbüll (Danish: Poppenbøl ) is a municipality in the district of North Friesland in Schleswig-Holstein . Neukrug and Süderheverkoog are in the municipality.
Geography and traffic
Poppenbüll is located about twelve kilometers northwest of Tönning and ten kilometers northeast of Sankt Peter-Ording on the Eiderstedt peninsula . The federal highway 202 and the railway line from Husum to Sankt Peter-Ording run a few kilometers south .
history
The place name probably means the settlement of Poppo , the word part "-büll" being borrowed from Danish. It means 'living space'. Poppo, possibly a native of Nordstrander, worked as an apostle in this area from 960 to 970, as J. A. Petersen writes in his hikes through the duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg (1839–47). (See also the North Frisian Chronicle of Anton Heimreich )
The Johanniskoog was probably diked in the 12th century ( Caspar Danckwerth mentions the year 987 with reference to Peter Sax ) and a church was built in Poppenbüll in 1113, which belonged to the parish in Garding . The altar of St. John's Church , which was created by Marten vanhaben, was "understandingly renewed" in 1883 by the North Frisian painter Carl Ludwig Jessen .
Initially, a dyke that was only 1.50 meters high surrounded the small Koog, which was raised twice towards the bottom. The dike protected the economic land and several large wharves built in the 12th century (Helmfleth, Hundorf and others). After the dike, yard yards were expanded.
