Location of the municipality Utersum in the district of North Friesland | ||
Utersum ( Danish : Yttersum , Frisian : Ödersem ) is a municipality in the district of North Friesland in Schleswig-Holstein . Hedehusum (56 inhabitants) is part of the municipality and was an independent municipality until 1969.
Geography and traffic
The place is located in the extreme southwest of the island of Föhr within sight of Amrum and Sylt between dunes and pine forests and is the smallest seaside resort on Föhr. In Utersum there is a rehabilitation clinic of the German Pension Insurance Federation , which specializes in lung diseases and areas of oncology and gynecology .
Plants such as samphire and beach aster can be seen in the not diked Godel lowlands . They live on salt marshes whose salinity comes from frequent flooding with sea water. Here are also the breeding grounds of some seabird species such as the avocet .
history
A stone box grave near the guest's house proves a settlement as early as the Stone Age . The three surviving mounds called Triibergem, evidence of a settlement in the Bronze Age . The megalithic tomb Sunberig is located near the village .
As part of Westerland Föhr , Utersum belonged to the royal enclaves and belonged directly to the Kingdom of Denmark , while Osterland Föhr and Wyk belonged to the Duchy of Schleswig . Only after Denmark lost Schleswig to Prussia , Utersum also came to Schleswig-Holstein in 1864.
Utersum, Hedehusum and Goting were the only municipalities in the second zone to vote in favor of a move to Denmark in the 1920 referendum ; because they were not directly on the later border, they stayed with Germany.
In 1969 Hedehusum was incorporated into Utersum.
