coat of arms

Blazon : "In gold above a narrow blue-silver corrugated shield foot, a flat green mountain, in front of it a silver hooded coffin with a red roof, underneath a silver ox head."

Economy and Infrastructure

economy

The Osterhusumer Meierei, which is the largest fresh milk producing company in Schleswig-Holstein, is located in the municipality. The dairy was founded in 1894 and was destroyed by fire on September 7, 2007. It was reopened in May 2008 and, according to the company, is one of the most modern dairy farms in Europe today.

Schools and kindergartens

There is a primary school with an attached gym in Witzwort. The building was renovated in 2005–2009. The new Protestant kindergarten, which was completed at the end of 2010, is right next to the school.

Churches

The brick- built St. Mary's Church is in Witzwort . It was built in the 15th century and supplemented in 1631 by a wooden bell tower and an attached choir . The wooden pulpit was installed in the church under Pastor Laurentius Adzen in 1583. A piece next to the church is the associated pastorate , in which the pastor of the Witzwort / Uelvesbüll parish lives. St. Marien has been illuminated at night from three sides in winter since 2004.

societies

Local sports life is shaped, among other things, by the gymnastics and sports club Witzwort from 1926 (TSV Witzwort) with around 400 members.

In the field of aid organizations there is a local association of the German Red Cross , to which an active readiness belongs. The DRK readiness is affiliated to the North Friesland disaster control through the 2nd North Friesland medical group, through which three vehicles are made available to the readiness. The main task of readiness is the medical care of the local festivals and events; for example the ring riding tournament of the riding club Witzwort from 1946 .

A tennis club was founded in 1993, and a tennis facility was completed in August 1994.

There is a local culture ring together with the neighboring community of Uelvesbüll . This has existed in this form since 1964 and, among other things, organizes the Witzworter village festival that takes place every 5 years .

Attractions

Red hooded coffin

The Rote Haubarg is about three kilometers north of Witzwort. It is a white plastered hooded coffin with a thatched roof , which was probably built in 1647. The origin of the name is unclear. Either it was not built until the 18th century and took its name from its predecessor, which was covered with red tiles and destroyed by fire around 100 years later, or the hooded coffin used to be red plastered or unplastered. The Rote Haubarg now houses the agricultural part of the Eiderstedter Heimatmuseum and is used as a restaurant.

leisure offers

In Witzwort there is a large number of leisure activities such as the "Eiderstedterplatz", which includes a riding arena, a toboggan hill (in winter), a tennis court. There is also another playground and sports field next to the school.
