The first lock was constructed by a Dutchman in 1642. In 1750, a renovation was carried out by Christopher Polhem , which lasted until the 1920s.

The growing traffic could no longer be coped with by this outmoded traffic junction, one spoke only of the slusselände (lock misery ). Therefore, Slussen was changed again when the clover-leaf-shaped , intersection-free roundabout was built south of the lock in 1935 . The architect was William-Olsson . It was one of the first inner-city street shamrocks in Europe and even then it was prepared for right-hand traffic.

Slussen today and tomorrow

Nothing has been changed on the Slussen carousel for decades. Today the once so modern and exemplary facility is in a worn condition, partly because of a lack of maintenance measures and partly because of damage to the pile foundation of the foundations . Since renovation is now considered impracticable, a completely new construction of the traffic facilities is planned.

Since the 1990s, various solutions to problems have been presented in architectural competitions. Due to changed conditions, a new competition was held in 2004, but none of the designs were selected. In March 2007, architect Ulf Christerson presented the latest version of an earlier proposal under the motto “Utblick Slussen” . Here an idea is being developed how Slussen, as a traffic junction between road, rail and water, could also become a pleasant place for pedestrians. Meanwhile, the Stockholm Roads Department spends two to five million kronor a year to mend Slussen.

On December 14, 2007, three important municipal administrations gave their consent to continue working with the Nya Slussen (New Slussen) proposal from the Nyrén architecture firm . On April 17, 2009, an architect duo consisting of the British company Foster + Partners and the Swedish firm Berg Arkitektkontor AB was awarded the contract for the “Nya Slussen” project . At the beginning of 2013, the relocation of channels and lines was started as a preparatory measure. The new transport hub could not be Template: future / in 2 yearscompleted until 2022 at the earliest .

In September 2015, the city of Stockholm gave the green light to the renovation and new construction of the Slussen transport hub . Demolition work began in October 2015.
