Södermalm in the Stockholm city area

Södermalm is a central municipality of Stockholm . It was created on January 1, 2007 by merging the former districts of Maria-Gamla stan and Katarina-Sofia to form a larger district (stadsdelsområde), which was given the historically established old district name Södermalm. The municipality is made up of the districts Gamla Stan , Riddarholmen , Långholmen , Reimersholme , Södermalm and Södra Hammarbyhamnen . In addition, the Årsta holmar archipelago belongs to the municipality, which is geographically assigned to the district of Årsta , which, however, is in the municipality of Enskede-Årsta-Vantör .

The former Katarina-Sofia district had about 43,000 inhabitants before it was incorporated into Södermalm. The name of the district referred to the two parishes that are located here. The district included the areas of the island of Åsön , which are east of the Götgatan road and the Södra Hammarbyhamnen district .

The Maria-Gamla stan district had around 62,000 inhabitants before it was dissolved. The district included the areas Gamla Stan , Riddarholmen , Långholmen , Årsta holmar and Reimersholme , as well as the areas of the island Åsön , which are located west of Götgatan.

The trendy SoFo district is also located in southern Södermalm .

Riddarholmen

Riddarholmen is an inland island in Mälaren , bordering Gamla Stan to the west. It is the smallest district in terms of area in Stockholm. In terms of population, Riddarholmen is second to last. In 2004 only two people were registered here. There is a large number of cultural and administrative buildings for this. Here you will find the Riddarholmskyrkan , the royal court with the Wrangel Palace , the Birger-Jarls-Tower and the Old Imperial Archives ( Gamla riksarkivet ).

August Strindberg was born on Riddarholmen in 1849 .

Södermalm

Södermalm, also known colloquially as Söder , is one of the central districts of Stockholm . The largest island, Åsön, was an industrial area with numerous workers' settlements at the beginning of the 20th century . Today the factories have been replaced by modern residential complexes. At the same time, however, Södermalm also has the largest proportion of older wooden houses. Södermalm has become a popular residential area for artists and intellectuals over the past decade.

Centrally on Södermalm, east of Götgatan , is the large Medborgarplatsen (Bürgerplatz), surrounded by the Lillienhov Palace from 1670, the so-called Göta Arkhaus from 1983, the Södermalmshalle from 1992 and finally the Medborgarhuset , built in 1936 based on the design of Architect Martin Westberg . A glass monument has also been erected here in memory of the Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh , who gave her last speech here on September 9, 2003, two days before her murder. Slussen , named after the Karl Johans lock between the Baltic Sea ( Saltsjö ) and Lake Mälaren, is located at the transition to the “Old Town” (Gamla Stan) as the central Stockholm transport hub for buses, subway and waterways . The Fotografiska Photo Museum was opened in 2010 . The Stockholm Tram Museum has existed since 1990 and the Stockholm Toy Museum in the district since 2005 .

Södermalm is the main location of the crime novels by Stieg Larsson and their film adaptations as well as the television series Kommissar Beck .

At the intersection of Folkungagatan and Götgatan is the Catholic cathedral St. Erik , built in 1892 and expanded in 1983 . To the east of Götgatan is St. Andrew's Church, built in 1877 . In the street Peter Myndes backe, in the north of Södermalm, in front of the Hotell Anno 1647 is the sculpture Humor . In the northern part of Södermalm, the Bellman House is also a former home of the poet Carl Michael Bellman . The historic Stomatol neon sign and the Mosebacke water tower are striking features of the north bank of Södermalm .

In the north-west of the island is the Mariaberget district and the Church of St. Maria Magdalena . Monteliusvägen, known for its wide views, leads along the north bank . From the steep north bank, the Katarinahissen and Mariahissen elevators led down to the bank. In the north of the island is the former brewery Münchenbryggeriet , which is now used as an event center. On the east bank of Södermalm there is a small park called Almond Park . To the northeast is the Fåfängan viewpoint .

In the west of the island is the Högalid Church, visible from afar, with its twin towers. To the north barrier island Långholmen leading Långholmsbron .

In the east, Södermalm is connected to the suburb of Nacka via Danviksbro .

Långholmen

The small island of Långholmen was home to a large prison that was built in 1724 and only closed in 1978. The prison was not demolished, but the main building was converted into a hotel and a youth hostel . Other parts of the prison complex house a community college and apartments.

Reimersholme

Reimersholme is a 16 hectare island in the west of the borough. It is connected to the district of Södermalm by a 39 meter long and 13 meter wide bridge. A wool factory was built here in the 1860s, and the prisoners from Långholmen prison also worked here. The factory went bankrupt in 1934 and so from 1942 residential buildings were built.

Södra Hammarbyhamnen

Södra Hammarbyhamnen and the district of Södermalm are separated from each other by a lake, which is connected by canals to the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälaren . This connection makes it possible to go around the mostly busy interior of Stockholm by boat. Large residential areas have been under construction in the Hammarby Sjöstad and Sickla udde areas since the end of the last century. The houses usually have 8 floors and are equipped with the most modern interior fittings. A tram line and various buses serve as connections to the city center .

Årsta holmar

The archipelago Årsta holmar consists of three uninhabited islands today in a bay of Mälaren ( Årstaviken ) and is not a separate district. Two railway bridges, eastern and western Årstabron, cross the islands .
