Mariahissen
Mariahissen is a building and a former public elevator on the north bank of the Stockholm island of Södermalm in Sweden .
Architecture and history
The building is located at Söder Mälarstrand 21. The residential and office building was built in 1885 in the neo-Gothic style based on a design by the architect Gustaf Dahl . A public elevator, the Mariahissen (Maria-Elevator), was integrated into the house, which connected the Söder Mälarstrand street on the banks of Riddarfjärden with the Mariaberget district, 28 meters higher . On the mountain side, a steel walkway leads from Bellmansgatan street to the top of the elevator. At the end of the 1930s, public service of the elevator was discontinued. With the Katarinahissen there was an elevator with a similar meaning further east, although this will be restored until 2022.
In the 1970s, the building was renovated according to plans by the architect Sune Malmquist . The elevator was renovated at the end of 2012, but is only available to tenants and guests of the house.
