The Katarinahissen ( Swedish for "Katarina elevator") is a public open-air elevator on Södermalm in the Swedish capital Stockholm . It has been out of service since 2011.

Old Katarinahissen

The old Katarinahissen was built according to plans by Knut Seve Lindmark between 1881 and 1883 to connect the Slussplan and the higher Mosebacken .

In 1909, Sweden's first movable neon sign, the Stomatol neon sign , was installed on the elevator at that time . She promoted the Stomatol toothpaste . The advertisement, consisting of 1,361 differently colored 25-watt light bulbs, is still in use today and is on a house behind the elevator.

Shortly after it was built, over a million people were already using the elevator. The price was 5 Öre for the trip up, 3 Öre for the trip down. In 1915 the steam drive was replaced by an electric motor. The height of the Katarinahissen is 38 meters.

The new Katarinahissen

In 1933 the original elevator was torn down. In 1935, a new elevator was completed on the same site according to the plans of architects Eskil Sundahl and Olof Thunström, which has been a popular tourist attraction in Stockholm ever since.

In addition to the upper stop at a height of 38 m and the lower one on the level of Saltsjöbanan or the lower bus station, the elevator also has a middle stop approximately on the level of Katarinavägen.

There is a popular restaurant called Gondolen ("the gondola") under the bridge connecting the elevator and the office building .

Decommissioning

In spring 2011, the owner and operator announced that the elevator, which had been shut down for a year at that time, should not be resumed. The elevator and construction are in too bad a condition for that. Since the square on Slussen is also being rebuilt, the resumption of operation with a new elevator will be delayed until 2019 or 2022.
