The Stockholm Tram Museum ( Swedish Spårvägsmuseet ) is a tram museum in Sweden .

history

The head of the Stockholm tram, Ernst Hjortzberg , tried to found a collection as early as 1920. The occasion was the preservation of a horse-drawn tram from 1877. The year 1922 is considered to be the year of foundation. At this point in time, the main part of the collection at that time was shown in the attic of the tram hall. Presumably the museum was intended for employees of the tram company. It is unclear whether and, if so, how the public had access to the collection.

In 1944 the museum moved into larger premises and had direct access from Tulegatan . In 1963 King Gustav VI visited Adolf the museum. In 1964 the museum moved to the Odenplan underground station . The entrance to the museum was between the two platforms. In 1990 the tram museum moved to the current premises.

location

The museum is located in the eastern part of Stockholm 's Södermalm district at Tegelviksgatan 22. In the same building is the Stockholm Toy Museum, with which the Tram Museum shares the entrance.

exhibition

Around 50 vehicles, especially trams , but also carriages, underground trains, trolleybuses and omnibuses are shown on an exhibition area of 6,400 square meters . They represent the history of local public transport in Stockholm. The museum includes trains that are driven on public routes outside the museum complex. The museum's own vintage buses run regularly in the summer months from Norrmalmstorg , via Slussen to the tram museum . The museum director is Christ Sandahl (as of 2015).

The museum operates a museum shop and a museum café. A small train, especially suitable for children, starts in the latter and takes visitors a little through the museum. The museum complex includes a library and an archive.
