Medborgarplatsen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Medborgarplatsen ( Swedish for Bürgerplatz ) is a square in the Södermalm district of Stockholm . There is also a station of the Stockholm Metro of the same name, which is very close to the square.

The seat

The square is bordered to the east by Götgatan , a street that runs all the way through Södermalm. Today it is a lively place where discotheques, etc. a. the clubs Snaps and Debaser , and pubs are located. There are also several beer gardens in summer. However, alcohol consumption outside of these is prohibited. The Medborgarhus and Göta Arkhus , which house the administration of the district, which also includes Gamla stan , are also located directly on the square .

Right on the square at Götgatan 48 is the Lillienhoffska palats , which was built between 1668 and 1670 by Johan Tobias Pötter. He was ennobled as Lillienhoff, which is how the building got its name. It was bought by the English minister Robert Jackson in 1723 , which is why it is also called Engelska Huset (the English house). The building served as a poor house until 1888. In 1900 the city of Stockholm bought the house. Today it houses a restaurant , offices and apartments.

The square is adjacent to the newly built complex at Södra Station , a stop on Pendeltåg . Södermalmshalle , which opened in 1992, is also part of the complex . On the other side of Götgatan is Björns trädgård park , which is also home to the Stockholm Mosque .

The development of the square is related to the expansion of the railway to Södra Station in the 1850s. The square was built and planned to be able to offer agricultural products to people arriving by rail. The square was named Södra Bantorget in 1876 , meaning Southern Railway Square . A few years earlier, its counterpart, the Norra Bantorget , i.e. the Northern Railway Square , had been built near Stockholm Central Station .

The square was rebuilt in connection with the construction of the Medborgarhus (town house). In 1936 it was proposed to rename the place Medborgarplatsen , which happened on December 17, 1940. Today it is the only square in Stockholm that has plats in its name. Other places are mostly called torg or torget .

Memorial site for the murdered Foreign Minister Anna Lindh , created by Leif Bolter

Since September 10, 2004 there has been a glass stone in memory of the murdered Foreign Minister Anna Lindh . She had given her last speech here before she was assassinated on September 10, 2003.

The square is often used as a starting point for demonstrations. Here on October 27, 2001 around 35,000 fans of the Hammarby IF football club celebrated the club's first and so far only championship.

Metro station

On the other side of Götgatan is the Medborgarplatsen metro station , which is served by the Green Line of the Stockholm metro. The station was opened on October 1, 1933 under the name Södra Bantorget and served by the first train that ran between Slussen and Ringvägen further south . After the square was renamed, the name of the subway station was initially retained. It was not until 1944 that the station was renamed to its current name.

In 1950, the station was rebuilt to make room for the new, longer underground trains. However, it was not finished in time for the scheduled start on October 1 and was therefore only opened on November 1, 1950. The fastenings that held the contact lines for the trams at that time can still be seen on the ceiling. Today the station is served by the green line and is located between the stations Slussen and Skanstull . The distance to Slussen is about 600 meters. The southern exit of the station is on Folkungagatan, the northern exit on Björns trädgård directly across from Medborgarplatsen, the latter only opening on November 29, 1995.

The platform is 6 to 18 meters underground, but 17 meters above sea level.

The walls of the station are tiled in yellow, some of them still in the original from the 1930s. As in all stations on the Stockholm Metro, there is also an artistic design. This is how Gunnar Söderström designed the pillars, and in the southern ticket office hall there are decorated walls and a floor mosaic by Mari Pårup from 1997.
