The Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyans Mosque ( Swedish : Zaid Ben Sultan Al Nahayans moské , Arabic جامع زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان), commonly known as the Stockholm Mosque ( Stockholms moské ) or Stockholm Grand Mosque ( Stockholms stora moské ), is the largest mosque in Stockholm , Sweden . It is located at Kapellgränd 10 , adjacent to the small park Björns trädgård in Stockholm's Södermalm district . The mosque is managed by Islamiska förbundet i Stockholm (Islamic Association in Stockholm) and was inaugurated in 2000. It is named after the former Emir of Abu Dhabi, Zayid bin Sultan Al Nahyan .

history

Discussions about a new mosque in the Stockholm region had been going on for twenty years before the plans were implemented in 2000. The first plan was to use the Borgerskapets änkhus building on Norrtull . Other places discussed were Observatorielunden, Kristineberg, Skärholmen , Tensta and Jarlaplan. In March 1995 the Stockholm City Council decided, after first consulting the Muslim leaders, to convert the old Katarinastationen power station into a mosque. The listed building, which was designed by the Art Nouveau architect Ferdinand Boberg and completed in 1903, was already influenced in its original version by " Moorish " Islamic architecture. Boberg was inspired after his trip to Morocco and built the building with the Mecca orientation and equipped it with high arched windows. In 1996 the building was sold by the city of Stockholm to the Islamic Association in Stockholm for 8 million Swedish kronor . The renovation of the mosque, however, was delayed due to protests and appeals, and did not begin until 1999. On June 8, 2000, the mosque was inaugurated.

Controversy

Links to the Muslim Brotherhood

According to an article in Svenska Dagbladet , the mosque's administration has ties to the Sunni pan-Islamic movement of the Muslim Brotherhood .

Yusuf al-Qaradawi

In July 2003, the Egyptian Islamic scholar Yusuf al-Qaradawi was invited to give a speech in the mosque at a conference arranged by the European Council for Fatwa and Research (co-founded by al-Qaradawi). Rashid al-Ghannushi , leader of the banned Tunisian Islamist party Hizb al-Nahda, also took part in the conference . During the conference, al-Qaradawi expressed support for suicide bombings against Israeli civilians, which he described as "a necessary holy war". Further he stated:

" Even if an innocent child is killed as a result of this holy war then it is not deliberate but rather because of the neccessities of the war. Neither in the future will these so called civilians stopped be intruders, evil, tyrants and oppressors. "

The sermon was reported to the police by Fredrik Malm , a politician from the Folkpartiet liberalerna .

Sermon translations

In May 2004, the Iraqi-Swedish journalist Salam Karam wrote an article in Svenska Dagbladet alleging that the mosque intentionally mis-translated and incorrectly translated portions of the Arabic-Swedish translation of the sermons delivered in the mosque by Imam Hassan Moussa / or omitted. Karam argued that, for example, the phrase "the United States oppress Islam " ( "the United States rapes Islam" ) with "We condemn the American torture of Iraqi prisoners" ( "We condemn the US torture of Iraqi prisoners" ) by the interpreter has been translated. Another contentious part which, according to Karam, has been left out of the translation is the following:

"The US will pay the price for all the martyrs who have died in Palestine. There are those who spread lies in the media and say that we in the mosque don't consider the former Hamas leader, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin , to be a martyr . He is indeed a martyr - the martyr of the martyrs. I want to send that word to everyone in Sweden. "

The mosque dismissed the allegations, saying that only certain parts were left out due to the "length of time".

Yasin tapes

In November 2005, Sveriges Radio reported that the bookstore located in the mosque was selling tapes with harsh anti-Semitic content. On one of the tapes, with a picture of the assassinated Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin on the cover, were Jews called the "disease", the "brothers of apes and pigs," and that the "only solution" against the Jews of the jihad was . A hadith with the following message was also read out:

"Oh Allah, exterminate the Jews, Oh Allah, exterminate the Jews, Oh Allah, exterminate the Jews! Oh, Allah, curse them and expel them and let them be whipped with suffering. Oh Allah, over heaven and earth!"

The Swedish Chancellor of Justice Göran Lambertz decided to initiate an investigation into hate speech ( hets mot folkgrupp ). A large number of cassettes, CD-ROMs and video tapes were confiscated during the raid. On January 2, 2006, Lambertz decided to stop the investigation. According to Lambertz, the statements made on the tapes, although they are "very critical of the Jews", do not violate Swedish law, and they must be viewed "in view of the historical and current conflict in the Middle East." The Chancellor's decision has been heavily criticized, including by major Jewish organizations in Sweden, the Swedish Committee Against Antisemitism ( Svenska Kommittén Mot Antisemitism ) and several prominent Swedish journalists and authors. A request that was supposed to get Lambertz to reconsider the decision was also made and signed by more than 3,000 people. Still, Lambertz decided against reviewing his decision.
