Östermalm is one of the central districts of Stockholm , the capital of Sweden . The municipality has about 61,000 inhabitants.

structure

Östermalm is divided into the following districts:

Östermalm

Most of the homes of wealthy residents are located here. Stockholm's nightlife is centered on the Stureplan , as many clubs such as Spy Bar , Laroy and Sturecompagniet are located here. The parks Stureparken and Humlegården with the Royal Library and the Stockholm German School can also be found in Östermalm.

There is a controversial group of sculptures by Willy Gordon on the market square in Östermalmstorg . On the southwestern part of the square is the Östermalms Saluhall market hall from 1888, the “dining temple” of Stockholmers. The Storchen pharmacy across from Elim Kyrkan is the most important pharmacy in Sweden in terms of cultural history.

Hjorthagen

The district is characterized by the Gasverket ( gas works ) and the associated large gasometers . Hjorthagen is an industrial district. The apartments are small and there are almost exclusively apartment buildings. The Lilla Värtan, part of the Baltic Sea , forms the border to the neighboring municipality of Lidingö . The Lidingö Bridge is the only connection for cars between Stockholm and Lidingö. Shortly before the bridge in Ropsten on the Stockholm side are the terminus of line T13 of the Stockholm subway (Swedish tunnelbana ) as well as the payment stations for the city toll .

Ladugårdsgärdet

Ladugårdsgärdet is the official name, but most people abbreviate the name of the district with Gärdet. The associated underground station is also called Gärdet . The district is characterized on the one hand by the main road to Lidingö and the adjacent port facilities, Värtahamnen and Frihamnen, and on the other hand by large parks. The district itself was created in 1926 after the Östermalm district had grown too large and was divided. Among other things, the television tower , Kaknästornet , various museums such as the Technical Museum , the Army Museum , the Police Museum , the Sports Museum and military facilities are located here .

In the southwestern part, Ladugårdsgärdet borders on the diplomatic quarter with the Diplomatstaden and various embassies for, among others, the USA, Germany, Finland, Norway and Japan. The main offices and studios for Sveriges Radio and Sveriges Television are also located here .

Djurgården

Denser development can only be found in the south-western part of Djurgården . Otherwise, the island consists of parks and isolated villas as well as state institutions. Much of the western part of the island is taken up by the Skansen open-air museum .

Norra Djurgården

The area used to be a royal hunting area. Today, with the exception of the area around the Royal Technical University and Ruddammen, it is part of Ekoparken, the world's first urban national park. In the southern part, near the KTH, is the old Olympic Stadium from 1912 and in the northern part of the district is the University of Stockholm, including some local recreation areas. Since the district in the north forms the border with the neighboring municipality, there is also a payment station for the city toll.
