Lidingö has an area of 30.9 km² and 41,636 inhabitants (December 31, 2013). As the name suggests (Swedish ö = island), the municipality is completely on several islands. The landscape is mainly characterized by villas and forests. Lidingö is connected to the mainland in Stockholm by two bridges, one for pedestrians and the Lidingöbana and one for car traffic . The junction of Lidingöbana in the direction of Stockholm is Ropsten.

economy

Most of the residents work in Stockholm. The suburban railway Lidingöbana is a feeder railway to the Tunnelbana . The largest employer in Lidingö is the community itself. Otherwise, about 650 people at the Linde group belonging AGA busy. AGA mainly produces industrial gases and was founded in 1904 on Lidingö.

Millesgårdens Sculpture Park

Arrival at Fjäderholmarna

Millesgården is an art museum and there is also a sculpture park in the outdoor area. The artist couple Olga and Carl Milles originally lived here until 1931. In 1936 he donated his property (house, atelje and garden) to the Swedish people.
Elfviks gård is an old manor house at the southwest end of Lidingö. It is used today for meetings and conferences.
Fjäderholmarna are an archipelago in the harbor entrance to Stockholm and a popular destination. For a long time the area was a restricted military area and access was therefore prohibited. After opening to the general public, the islands were opened up to tourists and the Stockholm population. Parts of today's attractions are housed in the old underground military facilities. The boats leave from Nybroplan in Stockholm, Nacka and Gåshaga on Lidingö.

Lidingö kyrka The old Lidingös church is located on a hill at the end of Kyrkviken ("church bay"). The church probably stands on the site of a medieval wooden chapel dedicated to St. Anne. There is a reference to the new building in 1623, which was financed by the lords of Djursholm and Lidingö, Imperial Councilor Svante Gustafsson Banér and his wife Ebba Grip. In 1817 the owner of Elfvik, the industrialist Lars Fresk, had the bell tower built.

Events

Every autumn there is a 30-kilometer cross-country run on Lidingö called Lidingöloppet . This event has been around since 1965 and is one of the series of four endurance competitions known as A Swedish Classic .
