Lidingöbana train on the Lidingöbron between Ropsten and Torsvik stations

Lidingöbanan is a suburban tram in Sweden that connects the island of Lidingö with Stockholm . It is operated on behalf of Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL). The train runs on the route between the subway terminus Ropsten and the terminus Gåshaga Brygga on the southern part of Lidingö.

history

Today's route was initially called SSLidJ (Stockholm-Södra Lidingöns Järnväg). From the start of operations in 1914 until the 1990s, it was operated by Trafik AB Stockholm-Södra Lidingön, which has been a subsidiary of SL since 1969 . The route was later operated by subcontractors for SL: Veolia Transport until 2012 , Arriva Sweden AB until 2015 and Stockholms Spårvägar since then. The contract runs until 2022.

From 1925 to 1967 the Lidingöbana trains ran beyond Ropsten on the Stockholm tram route 10 to the center of Stockholm. The last stop was Humlegården . In addition, there was a separate railway line on the northern part of Lidingö, Norra Lidingöbanan, which branched off at the eastern end of the bridge to Lidingö and ran for about four kilometers to Kyrkviken. After the acquisition of Trafik AB Stockholm-Södra Lidingön by SL and thus the operator of the southern route in 1969, this was finally shut down and dismantled in 1971.

When right-hand traffic was introduced in Sweden in 1967, the connection to Humlegården along with most of the Stockholm tram network was discontinued. From then on, Ropsten served as the terminus, where the eponymous terminus of a branch line of the Röda linjen of the subway was opened in the same year .

After 2000, the connecting track at Norra Hamnvägen to Värtanbanan was shut down and dismantled. This made Lidingöbanan an island operation without any connection to the railway network.

The age of the bridge (Gamla Lidingöbron) caused increased discussions since the turn of the millennium. There were fears that the combined train and pedestrian bridge might no longer meet the safety requirements. Since a new building was in question, there were considerations to connect Ropsten and the first station on Lidingö, Torsvik, with buses and to shut down the bridge. The bridge was certified in an extraordinarily good condition by more recent reports, so that these considerations were not pursued any further.

The Lidingöbana was out of service between June 21, 2013 and October 24, 2015. The line was rebuilt (partly double-track expansion, new construction of the depot at the AGA stop and procurement of new vehicles). Replacement buses operated (lines 21X, 21L and 21S). The construction phase, originally planned for a year and a half, was extended because it was only after the installation of a new signaling system that it was discovered that it had serious errors and had to be completely replaced.

Planning

There are various plans in connection with the project to renew the old bridge over the Lilla Värtan.

On the one hand, as part of the Spårväg City project, a route could then be built from downtown Stockholm to Ropsten and connected to the Lidingöbana, so that non-stop trips to Sergels torg and later to Kungsholmen could be offered. This project is currently (as of 2017) on hold.

Another plan is to extend the subway from Ropsten over a new bridge to Lidingö centrum. This would thus run parallel to the westernmost section of the Lidingöbanan.
