Tvärbanan ( German  The Querbahn ) is a tram line in Stockholm , which is operated on behalf of Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL). The route runs largely on its own track structure, only in Gröndal , Sundbyberg and parts of Solna are the tracks covered with grooved rails in the road space . The trains run normally on the right, while Swedish railways usually drive on the left. Track switching is possible on the entire route, trains run on sight on the road-flush sections in Gröndal and Sundbyberg.

vehicles

The cars that have been in use since the line was commissioned are of the Bombardier Flexity Swift type ; The six-axle articulated wagons with the Bo'2'Bo 'wheel arrangement are derived from the Cologne K4000. Externally visible differences are the head shapes, in addition only three doors were installed on each side of the car. The fourth, however, is prepared in terms of vehicle construction and can be retrofitted if necessary. The bogie under the joint is equipped with idler wheels because of the desired level and low-floor wagon floor. Additional vehicles were required for the extension of the route to Solna; three-part, eight-axle articulated wagons of the type Urbos AXL from the Spanish company CAF, classified as the A35 series. They are also used on the extended Djurgårds line , Spårväg City . Each car has space for 221 (A32) or 275 (A35) passengers and can be coupled and controlled multiple times with cars of the same design. Because of the need to be able to drive on switches with the same dimensions as long-distance railways and grooved rails typical of trams, the cars run on compromise wheel tires with a rear surface distance according to the long-distance railway standard above the top edge of the rails.

connections

The Tvärnana offers many connections to other railways: in Alvik to Nockebybana and to the green lines of the Tunnelbana (subway), in Liljeholmen to the red lines of the Tunnelbana, in Sundbybergs centrum and Solna centrum to the blue lines of the Tunnelbana, in Årstaberg , Sundbybergs centrum and Solna station to Pendeltåg and in Globen and Gullmarsplan again to the green lines of the Tunnelbana. On October 1, 2017, the extension to Sickla station was inaugurated, where there are connections to Saltsjöbanan.

In Liljeholmen there is a track connection to the long-distance railway network at Älvsö Godsbanagård station, which is used for vehicle delivery, but mainly for freight transport to a cement factory at Liljeholmshamnen. Further track connections for maintenance purposes and wagon transfers exist between Globen and Gullmarsplan and in Alvik through Brommadepå to the network of the green line of the Tunnelbana, in Alvik also to Nockebybanan .

As long as different signaling systems were installed on the two sections north and south of Alvik, the train journeys were interrupted despite the unfavorable transfer conditions in Alvik due to the outer platforms.

history

Construction of the line began in 1996. The Tvärnana has been running between Gullmarsplan and Liljeholmen since 2000 , later extensions from Liljeholmen to Alvik , from Gullmarsplan to Sickla udde in 2002 and from Alvik to Solna centrum in 2013 and to Solna station in 2014.

The construction of the route from Alvik to Solna, which began in 2009, was largely completed in May 2012. The first test drive to Solna centrum took place on June 4, 2012.

The Alvik – Solna centrum section was opened on October 28, 2013. The last section to Solna station was not opened until August 18, 2014 because of the complex crossings with the Frösundaleden.

In the summer of 2014, the entire Tvärnana was closed to widen some platforms. At the same time, a new signal system was to be installed, but this was not possible due to delivery problems at the signal supplier. Therefore, there was another total closure in the summer of 2017. This was also used to install three sweeping systems at Alviks strand, Årstaberg and Mårtensdal. Since August 5, 2017, there has been continuous operation from Solna station to Stora Essingen; since October 2, 2017 to Sickla station.

The realization of the so-called Kista branch was decided in 2016. This separates from the Solna branch north of Norra Ulvsunda and leads past Bromma airfield and a possibly new Solvalla shuttle train station to Rissne , Ursvik, Kista centrum and on to the Helenelund shuttle train station. Preparatory work began in 2015. The line to Ursvik is to go into operation in 2021, and to Helenelund in 2023.

operator

In 2011 the line was operated by Veolia Transport . Arriva Sverige AB has been entrusted with the management of the Tvärnana since August 2012. In order to create incentives for the operator, a remuneration model was chosen that is based on the number of passengers and not on the number of cars or space kilometers. The contract runs until 2020 and can be extended until 2024.
