Saltsjobanan
Saltsjöbanan is a 18.6-kilometer-long railway line that connects the tourist destination Saltsjöbaden with Stockholm . The railway line was inaugurated on July 1, 1893.
The railway was built at the same time as Saltsjöbaden was being expanded into an exclusive seaside resort. Steam locomotives ran on the route until 1913. Then the railway was fully electrified. Today 18 stops are in operation along the route. An average of 21,000 passengers drive the Saltsjöbana every day.
stretch
Saltsjöbanan consists of two routes. One leads from Slussen via Igelboda to Saltsjöbaden. In Igelboda, the second route branches off to Solsidan . Since August 22, 2016, the western terminus is no longer accessible for the Saltsjöbana due to the renovation of Slussen. Instead, a shuttle bus service from Henriksdal to Slussen was set up.

vehicles
Electric double railcars are used uniformly on the Saltsjöbana. These were adapted cars of the basic type C of the subway . They received pantographs and lateral profile compensating boards to reduce the gap between the vehicle and the platform. In addition, the middle door opening of each car was locked. Originally, a total of 13 double multiple units were produced in 1975 and 1976, which are included in the subway type designation system as the C10 (multiple unit) and C11 (control vehicle). Two more were added in 2000 and 2001, which were converted from cars from the C8 subway series.
Two coupled units (i.e. four-car trains) are used on the route to Saltsjöbaden. A double multiple unit operates on the connecting line to Solsidan.
business
The Saltsjöbana route is mostly single-track, but there are double-track sections between Saltsjö-Duvnäs and Störangen and between Saltsjö-Jarla and Nacka. The depot is located at Neglinge station on the branch to Saltsjöbaden. The Slussen terminus in Stockholm is a single-track terminus. The southern end point Saltsjöbaden is a double-track station with two outside platforms.
The operations in the Igelboda branch station are remarkable. In this double-track station with a central platform there are half-hourly correspondence stops during the day. The trains of the main line Slussen – Saltsjöbaden cross here and the Igelboda – Solsidan shuttle train connects to and from both trains on this line. Operationally, this is implemented in such a way that the Saltsjöbaden – Slussen train arrives on platform 1. After the shuttle train has entered platform 2, the Slussen – Saltsjöbaden train will enter this platform. Both trains face each other on the same track. After the passenger change, the two trains to Solsidan and Saltsjöbaden leave one after the other.
A train control system from Siemens Mobility GmbH has been in operation on all vehicles and track equipment since May 1, 2019. This is the punctiform train control ZUB222c.
Transfer options
At the end of 2016 there were only transfer options to buses, especially in Henriksdal, Sickla and Fisksätra. Since summer 2017 there has been an option to change to Tvärnana in Sickla . A new, double-track terminus is to be built near the Tunnelbana station and the Slussen bus terminal by 2026 .
Since it was decided to extend the Blå linjen ( German Blue Line ) from Kungsträdgården to Nacka Centrum, new connections to the Tunnelbana are expected to arise in Sickla and Järla from around 2025.
A previous plan to connect the Saltsjöbana with those of the Tvärnana is currently not being pursued.
Accident on January 15, 2013
An accident occurred on the Saltsjöbana on January 15, 2013 at around 2:30 a.m. After cleaning work in the Neglinge depot, a four-car train with a cleaning person on board started moving and sped into a house at the end of the route in Saltsjöbaden. The cleaner was seriously injured and all residents in the affected house got away with the horror. The house was badly damaged and the first two cars had to be scrapped. The Neglinge – Saltsjöbaden section was out of service for 8 months.
