Construction work on Berzelli Park in Stockholm
The new car on the opening day, August 21, 2010

Spårväg City is a tram in downtown Stockholm .

It is an extension of the Djurgårds line , which has been in operation with historic cars since 1991 on the route from Norrmalmstorg to Waldemarsudde. The vision is a tram line that runs through Stockholm city center from Kungsholmen in the west to Gåshaga on Lidingö . In the near future, however, there will only be the extension to T-Centralen, which was completed in 2018.

history

With the introduction of right-hand traffic in Sweden on September 3, 1967 ( Dagen H ), the existing tram network in Stockholm was shut down, the Tunnelbanan and buses should take over the traffic. Since that day there was no longer any regular tram service in Stockholm. Museum traffic has been operated with historical wagons on the newly built Djurgårds line between Norrmalmstorg and Waldemarsudde since 1991 .

Since then, the expansion of this route to the T-Centralen underground station at Stockholm Central Station and the integration of the route into the regular SL line network have been discussed again and again. On July 19, 2007 it was decided to extend the Djurgårds line to T-Centralen and to start regular tram operations.

In autumn 2009, construction work began on the first section of the line from Waldemarsudde to Sergels torg , for this purpose the tracks of the existing line were renewed and new tracks were laid between Norrmalmstorg and Sergels torg. The construction work was finished in May 2010, the commissioning took place on August 23, 2010. The new line bears the number 7, and the museum cars that continue to operate are now called 7N. An additional, intermittent 7E repeater only runs as far as the Skansen loop. The regular line 7 also turns there in the late evening.

With the introduction of Spårväg City, bus route 47 was discontinued, which had previously connected the city center with Djurgården at short intervals.

Further construction from Sergels Torg to the west is only possible once the reinforcement of the ceiling structure of the pedestrian passage under Sergels Torg has been completed. In connection with these construction measures, operations were initially shortened to Kungsträdgården in 2015. Operations up to the new T-Centralen stop began on September 3, 2018.

vehicles

As with the Tvärbanan, the power supply is 750 V DC. The use of the A32 wagons already in use on Tvärbanan is not possible due to the narrow curve radii of the route. Therefore, different vehicles were tested on the route. The choice finally fell on the Flexity Classic model from Bombardier , which is now referred to as the A34 at SL. Because the new vehicles ordered were not available quickly enough, operations were initially started with rental vehicles from Norrköping and Frankfurt am Main . The new vehicles ordered should go into operation at the end of 2011, and the borrowed vehicles will then be returned to their lenders. The primary color scheme (black with gold stripes) was the subject of discussion. In the summer of 2011 there were some vehicles with large advertising prints on the side. In November 2011, following a renewed vote on the SL website, it was decided that the cars should in future be colored blue. This is based on the blue painted cars that ran until 1967. The color tone is the same as used by SL in its corporate design . The existing six cars were repainted.

Further expansion

A branch is planned from Djurgårdsbro via Frihamnen to Ropsten . The route through Frihamnen, whose industrial use is to be increasingly reduced and in which residential and commercial buildings are planned, will connect this district to local public transport. In Ropsten there is a link with the red branch of the Tunnelbana and the Lidingöbana . At a later point in time, the trams are to be transferred from the city center to the Lidingöbahn and go through to Gåshaga.

On August 30, 2011, the second construction phase from Djurgårdsbro to Ropsten and the continuous link with Lidingöbana to Gåshaga was decided, including a new tram depot on Lidingö. This project is currently on hold.

There are also plans to extend the route to the west via T-Centralen to the island of Kungsholmen in order to develop a new development area in the north-west of the island.
