Villa Waldemarsudde with oil mill

Waldemarsudde or Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde ( Swedish udde "cape, headland") is the southernmost part of Stockholm's Djurgården peninsula (Swedish for "zoo") with Prince Eugens' villa of the same name on it. Today the building is a state art and open-air museum with a recreation park in Frisens Park .

Prince Eugen's apartment as well as his art collection and paintings made by him can be viewed. In the garden and on the terrace there are several statues made by important Swedish sculptors ( Per Hasselberg , Bror Hjort, Ivar Johansson and others). Near the shore, behind an 18th century house known as Gula huset ("Yellow House") and now called Gamla huset ("Old House") is the prince's tomb. Two windmills of Dutch design with codend have stood nearby since the 1780s , the five-story linseed oil mill (Swedish oljekvarn , linoljakvarn ) with an eight-sided cap, which was built by Johan Diderick Lundholm in 1784, produced linseed oil until 1830 and still exists today (without wing cross) , plus the windsaw mill (schw. vädersågskvarn ), which burned down in 1840 with all outbuildings. The oil mill, which he had restored at the beginning of the 20th century, was a favorite motif of the prince.

history

In 1892 Prince Eugene, who was a son of Oskar II , moved into an apartment in the “yellow house”. He felt so comfortable here that a few years later he bought the entire property. Then he asked the architect Ferdinand Boberg to construct a new building, which was completed in 1905. In 1913 a gallery was added to accommodate all of the prince's collected works of art. In 1947 the entire property and the art treasures passed into state property in a will. The state left both to the city of Stockholm, but the city returned all goods in 1995. In 1993 the building was placed under state protection as Byggnadsminne .
