Djurgården [ ˈjʉːrˌgoːɖən ] ( Swedish djur = animal, gård / en = the courtyard, meaning: the zoo) is an island, a district and park area in the east of Stockholm . The partly forested island belongs to the Stockholm district of Östermalm and has around 800 inhabitants, is 279 hectares and is surrounded by a 10,200 meter long beach. The island is actually called Valdemarsön , but practically only the district name is used.
location
Djurgården is located in the southern part of the Kungliga Djurgården, which was a royal hunting ground until 1809. It is easy to reach by car, bus, tram Djurgårdslinie (No. 7) and the two ferries Sjövägen (No. 80) and Djurgården ferry (No. 82) operated by Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL).
The Djurgårdsbrunnskanalen , which runs along the north-east of the island, was completed in 1833, as the waterway there had previously become too narrow and therefore unusable due to the uplift of the land .
