Gröna Lund ( Swedish for green grove ) or Grönan ( Swedish for green ) is an amusement park in Stockholm on the Djurgården peninsula , which was visited by around 1.5 million visitors in 2014.
Gröna Lund not only owns rides, but also theaters and stages for performances. Many national and international celebrities were and are guests on the stages, including Louis Armstrong , Benny Goodman , The Beatles , Paul McCartney and Jussi Björling . Until the 1970s, the Swedish musician Evert Taube performed every summer and played self-composed songs on his lute .
Gröna Lund is divided into two sections by Kleine Allee (Lilla Allmänna Gränd), the old and the new area. A small bridge called the “Spanish Steps” crosses the “Lilla Allmänna Gränd” and connects both sides of the park. The Tirol restaurant is also located in this area. Gröna Lund also has a building permit for the extension of the park to the existing parking lot on the other side of the "Allmänna gränd" (in German about public alley / avenue) in the north.
The park is open from late April to mid-September. From 2005 to 2008 it was also open to visitors for almost a month from the end of November until Christmas, with a Christmas market in addition to some rides. In 2009 it was decided not to continue this.
history
In 1883 the German Jacob Schultheiss leased the area in order to set up an amusement park with "carousels and other amusement arrangements". The park was inaugurated in the same year, making it the oldest and, along with Liseberg , the most famous amusement park in Sweden. The name "Gröna Lund" was originally the name of a small garden and later a tavern between Mjölnargården and Bellmannhuset in Djurgårdsstaden . This inn is mentioned in the Fredmans Epistles by Carl Michael Bellman (1740–1795).
Opposite Gröna Lund there was a competing amusement park called "Nöjesfaltet" on the other side of the alley until 1957.
The Lindgren family, descendants of the Schultheiss', ran the business of Gröna Lund until 2001. Afterwards it was taken over by Parks & Resorts Scandinavia , which operate the Kolmården Djurpark and the Skara Sommarland .
