Evert Axel Taube ( pronunciation : [ ˌeːvəʈ ˈtoːb ], born March 12, 1890 in Gothenburg , † January 31, 1976 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish poet, composer, singer and painter. He belonged to the German-Baltic noble family Taube .

Life

Evert Taube was born in Gothenburg and spent the first years of his life on the Vinga archipelago in the Kattegat off Gothenburg. His father was a naval officer. From an early age, Evert Taube came into constant contact with the sea and seafaring, which had a lasting impact on his work. After failing at school, he began an apprenticeship as a theater painter in Gothenburg, but then moved to Stockholm, where he tried a kind of bohemian life. From 1908 to 1910 Evert Taube went to sea as a sailor. His sea voyages took him to Australia . Evert Taube spent a few years of his life in Argentina , where he pursued various activities. Among other things, he worked for farmers in the pampas and as a worker on a canal construction. In connection with the outbreak of the First World War , Evert Taube returned to Sweden. Evert Taube led the life of a freelance artist and was often in financial difficulties. In 1925 he married the artist Astri Bergman, with whom he had four children.

Evert Taube's songs , which he published from the early 1920s, soon became popular in Sweden. Evert Taube sang his own songs with virtuosity and released numerous records . Evert Taube's son Sven-Bertil Taube (born 1934) became a successful actor and singer , especially as an interpreter of his father's songs.

In the course of his life, Evert Taube achieved enormous popularity - not least thanks to television . His performances in Stockholm's Gröna Lund amusement park , where he sang or recited his own songs to the lute, were legendary. Towards the end of his life, Evert Taube fought against environmental pollution and the destruction of historic buildings in the cities.

Evert Taube has received numerous honors: in 1950 he received the Bellman Prize from the Swedish Academy, in 1966 he received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the University of Gothenburg , and in 1970 he was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music . From October 2015, a portrait of Taube will be shown on the front of the 50 kroner banknote of the Swedish Reichsbank .

He was buried in the cemetery of St. Mary Magdalene Church in Stockholm.

Evert Taube, alongside Carl Michael Bellman , to whom he consciously linked, is the Swedish national poet par excellence. He wrote a large number of self-set songs. Recurring motifs are the seafaring life, the Swedish nature and adventure in distant countries. His catchy songs are extremely popular in Sweden and are often sung with pleasure. Evert Taube knew how to depict typical Swedish landscapes such as the Stockholm archipelago and the Swedish west coast in Bohuslän in a unique way .

Like his great role model Carl Michael Bellman, Evert Taube created a series of characters that recur in his songs: Above all, the adventurous and daring sailors Fritiof Andersson and Karl-Alfred and the art-loving squire Rönnerdahl should be mentioned. Like Erik Axel Karlfeldt and Dan Andersson , Evert Taube has mastered the art of creating suggestive name magic with sonorous place names ( Sjösala , San Remo , Rio de la Plata , etc.).

Evert Taube also wrote prose (novels, autobiographies, travel descriptions) and plays and was active as a painter and draftsman. He also dealt with the medieval Provencal troubadours , whose heir he saw himself. He himself wanted to be perceived as a demanding artist and was always a bit disappointed that he was reduced to the role of the popular songwriter in the public eye. I would rather be on the big stage in Gröna Lund than sit in the Swedish Academy - with this defiant statement Evert Taube covered his disappointment that his lifelong dream, the election to the Swedish Academy , did not come true.
