As pilots in are flat racing horses referred to, which have their strengths over short distances from 800 to 1400 meters. In Germany the minimum distance for a horse race is 1000 m, shorter races are occasionally run in France.
Races shorter than 800 meters are only run by the Quarter Horses, which run around 400 meters as a quarter mile. The Quarter Horses do not fall under the term aviator .
