Prince Eugen (born August 1, 1865 at Drottningholm Palace ; † August 17, 1947 in Stockholm ; actually Prince Eugen Napoleon Nikolaus ) was the youngest son of the Swedish King Oskar II and his wife Sophia von Nassau . He was Duke von Närke and, in addition to his representative duties, devoted himself to painting.

Life

Prinz Eugen studied painting with Wilhelm von Gegerfelt from 1885 to 1886 and Puvis de Chavannes in Paris from 1887 to 1889. He mainly devoted himself to landscape painting. The motifs were initially the cultural landscapes of Sörmland and Stockholm, and since the 1930s Österlen in Skåne . But Prinz Eugen also accepted public contracts. The best known are the altar painting in Kiruna Church and the frescoes in Stockholm City Hall .

In 1905 he bought the Waldemarsudde at the Stockholm Peninsula Djurgården and had a mansion by architect Ferdinand Boberg in the Art Nouveau building. When he died in 1947, he bequeathed the villa and its art collection to the Swedish state. Today the villa is a museum that houses the prince's apartment and an extensive collection of 19th and 20th century Swedish paintings.
