Ernst Barlach House
The Ernst Barlach Haus - Hermann F. Reemtsma Foundation is an art museum located in Hamburg's Jenischpark , which is dedicated to the expressionist artist Ernst Barlach and his works and also presents changing exhibitions. The founder of the house is the industrialist Hermann F. Reemtsma .
Creation of the museum
Origins of the collection
In 1934, through Hugo Körtzinger's mediation, Reemtsma visited the multi-talented draftsman , graphic artist , sculptor and dramatic writer Ernst Barlach in his studio in Güstrow . He then began to build up a collection of his works and knew how to protect them from the consequences of being classified as degenerate art by the Nazi regime: Barlach's memorials in the Heiliggeistkirche in Kiel and in Güstrow Cathedral were sawed up and melted down in 1937 and 381 of his works including graphics were confiscated, Barlach himself was banned from exhibiting and working. In the 1950s, Reemtsma established the art foundation named after him in order to know that the works were preserved and made available to the public. Reemtsma began his collection with the 1925 walnut sculpture The Ascetic and commissioned Barlach to complete the frieze of those who listened . In the year Barlach died in 1938, Reemtsma had acquired 20 sculptures and around 100 drawings.
building
Shortly before his death in 1961, Reemtsma commissioned the construction of the Ernst Barlach House as an exhibition space for Barlach's works. The flat, functionalist museum building was built from 1961 by the Hamburg architect Werner Kallmorgen , completed in 1962 after the death of the founder and opened in October 1962. The bright exhibition rooms are grouped around an inner courtyard in which Barlach's bronze sculptures are set up. The first curator was Hugo Sieker . In 1995/1996 the building was expanded to include a further exhibition room for the presentation of temporary exhibitions and the inner courtyard was closed with a vaulted glass roof. The Hermann Reemtsma Foundation provides an annual operating grant for the museum.
The collection
The museum has over 140 plastic works, including 30 wooden sculptures as well as 400 drawings and an almost complete collection of prints. Also worth mentioning is the attached library with literature about Ernst Barlach and his time.

The temporary exhibitions are presented both in their own rooms and in the rooms of the Barlach Collection.
