Emil Schumacher
Emil Schumacher (born August 29, 1912 in Hagen , Westphalia ; † October 4, 1999 in San José , Ibiza ) was a German painter and representative of the Informel .
Life
Emil Schumacher was born on August 29, 1912 as the third child of Anna and Emil Schumacher in Hagen. From 1926 to 1931 he attended secondary school in Hagen.
Schumacher studied from the winter semester 1931/32 to the end of the winter semester 1933/1934 advertising graphics at the crafts and arts and crafts school in Dortmund. From 1935 to 1939 he worked as a freelance painter without taking part in exhibitions.
After the transfer of power to the National Socialists, Schumacher was not accepted into the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts on charges of " cultural Bolshevism " . During the war years he was a technical draftsman in the accumulator works, a Hagen armaments company. In 1941 he married Ursula Klapprott. Immediately after the end of the war he made a new start as a freelance artist.
1947 to 1953
After the Second World War, Schumacher began with cubist landscapes, in 1947 he had his first solo exhibition in the studio for new art in Wuppertal, which was set up by the architect Rasch, and became a co-founder of the artists' association Junge Westen . In 1948 he received the Young West Art Prize of the city of Recklinghausen, in the same year the Karl Ernst Osthaus Museum Hagen bought two of his pictures, still lifes and still lifes with mushrooms . In the 1950s he developed works that lived only from color, without any structural framework. The dominant theme of his work is the intrinsic value of color and color matter.
From 1954
In 1954, Schumacher took part in the exhibition German Art after 45 , organized by Willem Sandberg in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, where contemporary art from Germany was shown abroad for the first time after the war. From 1955, Schumacher became known for his first exhibitions and prizes; his participation in the 29th Venice Biennale in 1961 and the Guggenheim Award (National Section) in 1958 document his international breakthrough.
In 1959 Emil Schumacher took part in the documenta II in Kassel . From 1958 to 1960 he held a professorship at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg . Between 1961 and 1972 Emil Schumacher was a board member of the German Association of Artists . From 1966 to 1977 he was a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe .
In 1964 he was represented with three large-format pictures at documenta III , and in 1977 at documenta 6 in Kassel . Today his works hang between New York and Munich in many important museums around the world. His numerous works of art for public spaces include a. large-format mosaic works for the Colosseo underground station in Rome .
