Residents

Sant Josep is the third largest municipality in Ibiza with 27,413 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). The village of the same name had 490 inhabitants in 2008 and is the seat of the municipal administration.

Tourism led to an exponential population growth from the 1960s onwards . While there was no significant population growth until then (average 1920–1960: 0.0%), the number of inhabitants has more than quadrupled since 1960. This was initially due to the influx of workers from the Spanish mainland and from the 1990s onwards mainly due to the strong immigration of Western European residents. As a result, the proportion of local residents has declined in recent decades. Today less than half of the population (42.1%) are native to the Balearic Islands and only 12.9% are from Sant Josep.

The population is 52.3% male and 47.7% female.

A resident of Sant Josep is called josepí , a resident josepina .

Attractions

Of historical interest are the remains of the Punic-Romanesque settlement Ses Paises de Cala d'Hort and those of the Phoenician village of Sa Caleta, as well as the defense towers Torre del Carregador de sa Sal Rossa , Torre de ses Portes , Torre des Savinar and Torre de Comte from the 17th or 18th century . The Cova Santa is a natural grotto about 25 meters deep with stalactite and stalagmite formations that are very rare for this region .

particularities

Even if the larger towns of Eivissa, Sant Antoni and Santa Eulària des Riu are better known, Sant Josep is by far the richest municipality in Ibiza per inhabitant. On the one hand, this is due to the Ibiza Airport, which belongs to Sant Josep . On the other hand, the remote corners of the community have become a magnet for global celebrities. Some famous people like Phil Collins and Mike Oldfield have summer and holiday residences in Sant Josep, especially in Es Cubells.
