Residents

With 6397 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019), Sant Joan is by far the smallest municipality in Ibiza. The village of the same name is the administrative seat of the municipality.

From the 1980s onwards, tourism in the coastal towns of the municipality caused the population, which had been falling until then, to rise again. Since the 1990s, population growth has actually been quite high, with the number of inhabitants rising by 54% between 1991 and 2008. Nevertheless, Sant Joan has not yet reached the population of 1940.

The population growth is due to the strong immigration of foreigners and, to a lesser extent, to the influx of mainland Spaniards. As a result, the proportion of local residents has declined in recent decades. Today around half of the population (49.8%) are native to the Balearic Islands and 28.5% from Sant Joan.
