geography
location
Ibiza is a port city on the southeast coast of the Mediterranean island named after it . The municipality borders in the west on Sant Josep de sa Talaia , in the northwest a little bit on Sant Antoni de Portmany and in the north on Santa Eulària des Riu . Ibiza Town is by far the smallest municipality on the island in terms of area, but the largest in terms of population.
The central square is the Vara de Rey at the foot of the old town, which is surrounded by buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The inner old town, known as Dalt Vila, is located in an elevated position above the Baix de sa Penya bay and is surrounded by a city wall that has been completely preserved to this day. The main entrance is the Ses Taules city gate . From the south, clockwise, it has the protruding bastions of Sant Joan , Santa Llúcia , Santa Tecla , Sant Bernat , Sant Jordi , Sant Jaume and Sant Pere . The old town reaches its highest point at the Plaça de la Catedral , where the Archaeological Museum, the Casa de La Curia and the Mirador del Rey Jaume I viewpoint are located. From there, the view of the modern expansion of the city opens up.

history
The city was founded in the 7th century BC. Founded by the Phoenicians . They named both the city and the island after the god Bes Ebusim . From the Phoenicians a large necropolis west of the old town ( Dalt Vila ), the Puig des Molins ("Mill Hill"), has been preserved, which was later also used by the Romans . More than 4,000 Punic and Roman graves have been discovered here. Grave goods found there can now be viewed in the Museu Monogràfic at the foot of the hill. In January 2011, during construction work on the citadel , the remains of a Phoenician settlement and a Roman temple were uncovered for the first time .
The massive defensive walls of Dalt Vila, which still characterize the cityscape of Ibiza today, were built under the Moorish rule (9th to 13th centuries). The city was called Yabisa by the Moors . The fortress was expanded under the Aragonese and Spanish kings. In the 1990s, the walls, some of which had fallen into disrepair, were restored. In 1999 the old town was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO .
Infrastructure
At the end of July 2013, the new CETIS central bus station was inaugurated on Carrer De Sant Cristòfol . Previously, all bus terminus stops were on Avenida Isidor Macabich . Only five months later, the central bus station CETIS was closed again and the old terminus on Avenida Isidor Macabich was put back into operation. It is still not known when the new bus station will finally open. (As of June 2018)
There are regular ferries from the port to Barcelona , Palma de Mallorca and Formentera .
population
Residents
A resident of Ibiza Town is called in Catalan eivissenc (Spanish ibicenco ), a resident is called eivissenca ( ibicenca ). The inhabitants of the city and island are called Ibizan in German .
With 49,783 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019), just over a third of the island's permanent residents live in Ibiza Town. The population growth has been quite high since the beginning of mass tourism in the 1960s, so that the number of inhabitants increased almost fivefold between 1960 and 2014.
While the population growth was initially due to the influx of workers from mainland Spain, the number of inhabitants has increased since the 1990s and even more sharply since the turn of the millennium, mainly due to the high immigration of foreigners, especially from South America , Romania and Morocco . As a result, the proportion of locals has continued to decline over the past few decades. Today only 39.5% of the population are native to the Balearic Islands and 33.6% are from Ibiza Town.
Development of the population:
Note: The higher number of inhabitants in 1877 and 1887 is due to the fact that Formentera was part of the municipality of Ibiza Town at that time .
