The necropolis of Puig des Molins (the necropolis of the "Mühlenberg") in Ibiza Town is considered to be the largest and best preserved complex from the Phoenician - Punic times in the western Mediterranean. It was made in the 7th century BC. It was laid out in the time of the Phoenician colonization of the island of Ibiza and was used by Carthaginians and Romans in the following centuries . The current size of approx. 3000 grave complexes on the current area corresponds to only a fraction of the original complex. Large former parts of the necropolis were built over with streets and buildings.

The subterranean tombs, the hypogea , can be reached by going through the Monographic Museum of Ibiza at 31 Via Romana. In the museum you can see grave goods from different eras and cultures. The small clay figures of goddesses like Tanit or the Dama de Ibiza exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid mostly show a form of Demeter . Various smaller animal-shaped clay jugs, jewelry pendants and painted ostrich eggs can also be seen. Some of the underground burial chambers are accessible.

There are other testimonies of Phoenician and Roman culture in Ibiza Town. In January 2011, during construction work on the citadel , the remains of a Phoenician settlement and a Roman temple were uncovered for the first time .
