history
The airport on Ibiza was laid out at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War and at that time it was used under the military name Aeródromo Es Codolar . Es Codolar is the name of the land on which the Aeródromo was built.
After the war Es Codolar was used by rescue pilots from the Spanish SAR squadron and the coast guard .
On August 13, 1949, the airport was opened for civil aviation for the first time and the name was changed to Aeroport d'Eivissa . However, due to unclear ownership, the facilities and flight operations had to be closed again for several years.
The expropriation procedure was not completed until 1954 and further expansion began. On April 1, 1958, the first scheduled flights of the Spanish airline Aviaco , Ibiza - Palma and Ibiza - Barcelona took off . In July, Iberia opened regular services to Valencia and Barcelona.
In the summer of 1960, a new check-in hall and control tower were built. In 1961 neighboring land was expropriated and the airport expanded.
In 1962, the first runway extension began, which was ended in a second step with the runway lights in 1964.
On July 15, 1966, international air traffic was opened and the name Aeroport d'Eivissa Sant Josep was introduced.
