history

The location in Alguaire was only chosen at the beginning of the 21st century as an alternative to the Alfés airfield 10 km south of Lleia's city center near today's AP-2 .

Flight operations at the Aeródromo de Alfés on the northern edge of the territory of the municipality of Alfés began in 1929, and the airfield has since been used mainly for air sports, with an interruption between 1936 and 1948. Another smaller airfield already existed before 1929 at Magraners in the east of Lleida.

With the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War , the site became an important military airfield for the Air Forces of the Spanish Republic in 1936 , including during the Battle of Belchite . In the course of the Aragon offensive in April 1938, the use of the Aeródromo de Alfés, now very close to the front, almost completely ended. In the final phase of the war in Catalonia, both the German Condor Legion and the Italian Aviazione Legionaria used the airfield at the turn of 1938/1939.

At the beginning of the millennium, the Generalitat de Catalunya acquired the Alfés airfield from the Spanish Ministry of Defense with the aim of developing it into a civil airport. Due to nature conservation point of view, here is growing on 100 hectares a unique wild in Catalonia thyme -Aue and at least until 2006/2007 there was an occurrence of Dupont's lark , the plan was rejected after the regional elections in 2003 and the new airport finally built in Alguaire from 2007 . Today the Aeròdrom d'Alfés only serves as the home ground of the royal air sports club "Reial Aeri Club Lleida".

The first scheduled flights from Alguaire took place on February 5, 2010 by Vueling to Palma and Paris .
