The Melilla Airport ( IATA code MLN , ICAO code Geml , span. Aeropuerto de Melilla ) is used to supply the Spanish enclave of Melilla for the aviation and is located three kilometers from the city center.

history

The airport was built from 1967 and opened in 1969. Its construction had become necessary because the formerly located in the Protectorate area Tauima Airport (today: Nador Airport ), which was used to connect Melilla, had not been on Spanish territory since Morocco's declaration of independence in 1956. This had significant consequences for the passengers who had to fly via Tauima on their journey to or from Melilla; among other things, every transport between the airport and the exclave had to be done in sealed buses to prevent official entry into Morocco.

This situation only ended when Melilla got its own airport for civil domestic and international flights. First, the airline Spantax offered a connection to Málaga three times a day ; from 1974, after the runway was expanded , the airport was also used for charter flights.

Over the years, numerous modernizations of the technical and logistical facilities followed, which are still not completed. Among other things, an expansion of the parking space capacities and renovations of the passenger and cargo terminal are currently being carried out.

Airlines and Destinations

The airline Iberia and its regional partner Air Nostrum serve Melilla Airport. There are connections to Almería , Barcelona , Granada , Madrid , Málaga and Seville . Air Europa also operates flights to Málaga.
