The Badajoz airport ( Spanish Aeropuerto de Badajoz ) is a Spanish airport, which by the state airport operator Aena is operated. The airport is also used as the Base Aérea de Talavera la Real by the Spanish Air Force . The assigned city of Badajoz is about 13 kilometers to the west.

history

The history of the airport goes back to the 1930s when the Aeródromo Las Bardocas was built between the Gévora and Guadiana rivers . During the Spanish Civil War from 1937 onwards, the site was used for elementary flight training for the Spanish Air Force. The German Condor Legion also used the space at times.

A new location was later sought and work began on the current site in the early 1950s. The Escuela de Reactores' school flight operations began in 1953. Shortly after the facilities were expanded, the airport was also able to handle civil flights from 1958.

The start of the first line connection was delayed by several years until the start of the line to Madrid on July 14, 1976. Because of complications between military and civil operations on an apron, a separate civil area was set up from 1980 to 1983, but it was not put into operation until the flight plan change in 1990, which brought Badajoz a twice daily Madrid connection and twice a week Barcelona connection.

Due to the strong growth in passenger numbers and flight connections, the decision was made to expand the civil area, which was completed in July 2010. The terminal area was doubled to 4,400 square meters, the apron doubled from 17,000 to 35,000 square meters, and the number of parking spaces for cars increased to 222.

Military use

As a military airfield , Talavera serves as a school base and is home to the Ala 23 (Spanish wing, a squadron) with the Escuadróns 231 and 232 . The focus is on advanced training, for which both squadrons have been equipped with the F-5 since 1970 .

In addition since 2019 a third season, which Escuadrón 233 , the drone of the type General Atomics MQ-9 (NR-05) uses.

Airlines and Destinations

Air Nostrum offers flights to Alicante-Elche , Barcelona El-Prat and Madrid-Barajas .

Since March 26, 2012 Helitt flew daily to Madrid-Barajas . For these flights, Helitt Airlines used ATR 72 aircraft with space for 66 passengers. Helitt used gate T2, counters 502-503. On February 18, 2013, Helitt suspended all flights. After five months without scheduled flight connections, Air Europa started flights to Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat on July 1, 2013 . The flights were operated by Swiftair on ATR 72 aircraft daily except Saturdays and Sundays.
