The airport Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat ( IATA code : BCN , ICAO code : LEBL ; Catalan Aeroport Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat , Spanish Aeropuerto Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat ) is the international commercial airport of Barcelona in Catalonia , Spain , which is largely in the territory of the municipality of El Prat de Llobregat . With around 53 million passengers (2019), it is the second largest airport in Spain after Madrid-Barajas airport and the seventh largest in Europe . It serves as a hub for Air Nostrum , Ryanair and Vueling .

In the greater Barcelona area there are also the smaller airports Girona 90 km northeast and Reus 90 km southwest, which are primarily served by low-cost and charter airlines and some are also marketed as an airport for Barcelona.

Location and transport links

The airport is located about 15 km southwest of downtown Barcelona in the area of ​​the municipality of El Prat de Llobregat .

  • Road : The journey from the central Plaça de Catalunya in Barcelona to the “El Prat” airport takes 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the volume of traffic. The approximately 14-kilometer route leads via the Plaça d'Espanya onto the city motorway C-31 (Autovia de Castelldefels in the direction of Sitges ) to the airport.
  • Bahn : Line R2 North of Rodalies Barcelona runs in 30-minute intervals from the terminal T2 to the airport via the main station Sants to the central station Passeig de Gràcia in the city and ends in Maçanet-Massanes . The journey from the airport to Sants train station takes around 20 minutes.
  • Metro : The L9 Sud metro line runs from Terminals T1 and T2 to the Zona Universitària . There are transfer options to lines L1, L3, L5 and L8.
  • Bus : The Aerobus connects Plaça de Catalunya and Plaça d'Espanya with the airport. There is also line 46 between Plaça d'Espanya and the airport. The bus journey takes around 35–50 minutes (depending on traffic).

history

After the first airfield was built in El Remolar in 1916, the current location was opened just two years later in the area of ​​the municipality of El Prat de Llobregat . The first airline operated the Toulouse company Latécoère , which is still active in the aviation industry today , and which at the time took up a route with several stopovers between its home base and Casablanca . In addition to civilian use, the airfield also served the Armada Española as a base for zeppelins .

Iberia opened its first ever route between Barcelona and Madrid in 1927 . Catalonia remained under the control of the Republic for a long time during the Spanish Civil War, and El Prat was again used militarily by the Republicans and their allies, such as the Red Army aviators . Towards the end of the war, units of the German Condor Legion , u. a. the 2nd season of Jagdgruppe 88 (2.J / 88) took the place for a shorter time. Decades later, when the third runway was being built in 2002, the remains of a Bf 109 were excavated.

The first runway dates from 1948 and in the same year the Pan Am began operating intercontinental traffic . The airport was then expanded further and the second runway opened in 1952. After more than 1 million passengers were handled for the first time in 1963 , the first Pan Am Jumbo from JFK floated into Barcelona here in 1970, just like six months earlier in Frankfurt .

There were further expansion waves in the run-up to the Summer Olympics in 1992 and especially in the first decade of the 21st century when the third runway and a completely new terminal , today T1, southwest of the existing one, today T2, were built.

In 2018, around 50.17 million passengers were handled after a growth of 6.1%.

With the opening of the L9 Sud line on February 12, 2016, both terminals were connected to the Barcelona metro network.

Barcelona Airport is currently operated by the state-owned Aena . At the beginning of December 2010, however, the Spanish government announced a possible partial privatization of Aena and Madrid and Barcelona airports. For this purpose, Barcelona Airport is to be spun off into a subsidiary and 90.05% of the capital is to be opened up to a private operator by the end of 2011, who will operate the airport with a 20-year concession .

Barcelona Airport has two terminals:

Terminal T1

Terminal 1, also called T1 , which was opened on June 16, 2009 by the Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero , is located in the southwest of the site. The 1.3 billion euro building by the architect Ricardo Bofill has a size of 544,000 square meters. Since opening a large part of operating at Barcelona airport airlines moved to Terminal 1, including Vueling and the alliances oneworld (including Iberia and) SkyTeam and the Star Alliance (including Lufthansa , Austrian and Swiss ).

Terminal T2

A free shuttle service with buses runs between the two terminals at frequent intervals.

Incidents

  • On April 14, 1958, the pilots of a De Havilland Heron 2D of the Aviaco ( EC-ANJ ) were forced to perform a violent evasive maneuver on the approach to El Prat airport in order to avoid a collision with another Heron. The machine got out of control and crashed into the sea. All 16 occupants were killed as a result of this air traffic controller error.
  • On November 8, 1960, a Lockheed L-1049G Super Constellation of Trans World Airlines (TWA) (N7125C) , operated for the Spanish Iberia , had an accident while landing at Barcelona-El Prat Airport. The plane coming from Madrid hit a heap of rubbish a good 30 meters from the runway, lost its left wheels, threw off the runway and caught fire. All 71 occupants, 8 crew members and 63 passengers survived.
  • On March 24, 2015, Germanwings flight 9525 to Düsseldorf took off from here . The copilot crashed the plane over the French Alps. Everyone on board died.
