The El Hierro Airport ( Spanish Aeropuerto de El Hierro , IATA code : VDE , ICAO code : GCHI ) is the airport of politically to Spain and geographically to Africa belonging Canary Island of El Hierro .

history

Airport in the far east of the island

After trying in 1962 to find a suitable area for an airport on the mostly impassable island, in 1968 the construction of the runway with apron and passenger terminal began. The coastal area Llano de los Cangrejos in the northeast of the island near the capital Valverde was selected. Then the radio technology was installed and the airport officially opened on December 12, 1972. In 1977 the runway was expanded. Extensive renovations and the construction of a new tower took place in 1990. In the following two years the runway was expanded again. The current terminal was also built during this time.

The airport operates domestic flights to the neighboring islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife , handled by the regional airlines Binter Canarias and Canarias Airlines on behalf of Binter Canarias and Canary Fly .
