The Sinfonietta Mainz is a philharmonic orchestra .

The orchestra sees itself as the successor to the almost 160-year-old Mainz Philharmonic Orchestra and would like to continue its tradition.

In 1971 the “Chamber Music Working Group Mainz” was founded with 30 members. In 1974 the development was continued with a new establishment as the "Mainz Instrumental Ensemble". The musical direction was initially by Tilmann Köster (a student of Sergiu Celibidache ), from 1989 Stefan Laasch (church musician from Frankfurt) took over the direction.

In 1992 the name was changed to “Sinfonietta Mainz” - Philharmonic Orchestra. The musical director was initially Alfred Stenger, and later Tibor Istvanfy. Michael Millard has been the musical director since 1995.

As a result there were numerous collaborations with well-known soloists such as José Gallardo, Andreas von Wangenheim, Maria Egelhof, John Trelaeven, Xiao Ming Han, the Mainz piano duo and others

Crossover projects and a. together with the Mainz band Jammin'Cool on the Domplatz in Mainz: Symphonic Rock Night, or Christmas Rock.

Today the orchestra consists of 80 permanent members who, depending on the program, are supported by up to 40 other musicians.
