Transport links
Car, taxi and rental car
The airport can be reached by car from the city center via the motorway (subject to a charge) in around 10-15 minutes (Autovía BI-631 Salida 11). Several parking garages, which are directly connected to the airport building, are available to all travelers depending on the purpose ("long parking" or "short parking"). Parking at the terminal is free for less than 15 minutes.
Taxis are available outside the terminal. Taximeters indicate the price. For longer journeys, a fixed price can also be agreed in advance.
Rental cars can be rented inside the airport building. In addition to the well-known, global companies, there are also smaller, Spanish companies. It is usually worth making a comparison on the Internet beforehand.
bus
City bus Bizkaibus : The BizkaiBus A3247 runs at regular intervals (every 15 minutes) between the airport and the city area. The four stops are currently in the immediate vicinity of the Guggenheim Museum ( Alameda Recalde 11 , approx. 15 minutes), the central Plaza Moyua ( Moyua Plaza , approx. 20 minutes), Gran Vía ( Gran Vía 79 , approx. 25 minutes) as well the terminus, the Termibus bus station (near the San Mamés football stadium , approx. 30 minutes). The buses usually run between 5:15 a.m. and 10 p.m. The trip costs € 1.30 per person in one direction. By purchasing a Creditrans card for € 5, the price drops to € 1.05. The Creditrans card can be purchased in the airport building not far from the bus stop and can also be used for inner-city transport such as the BilboBus city bus , the EuskoTran tram , the underground ( Metro ) and the regional EuskoTren for several people and is worthwhile for longer trips Stay in Bilbao.
The terminus, the Termibus bus station (approx. 30 minutes travel time), is the hub for other long-distance buses to all of Spain.
Regional bus Lurraldebus: The Lurraldebus serves the routes Bilbao - Zarautz - San Sebastián / Donostia and the connection Bilbao - Éibar - Bergara - Mondragón / Arrasate at regular intervals
Both BizkaiBus and Lurraldebus arrive at the upper level (departure) but depart from the lower level (arrival).
Unlike in many German cities, it is the custom in Bilbao to queue up and keep the order of the people waiting. This impression is immediately noticeable for newcomers at the airport.
Subway
Work on a metro link between Bilbao city center and the airport is currently ongoing. Starting in 2020, the planning to expand the new Línea 3 to this connection will take concrete shape. The travel time between the city center and the airport should be around 7 minutes.
Incidents
- On December 28, 1972, a crashed Fokker F28-1000 of Iberia ( air vehicle registration number (EC-BVC) ) at a training flight at the airport Bilbao. After a warning about asymmetrically extended landing flaps, a landing was carried out with the flaps retracted, in heavy rain and a tail wind. In addition, it was touched down late, so that the machine rolled over the end of the runway and got into bumpy terrain, where it broke into three pieces. All four pilots (the only occupants) survived.
- On February 19, 1985 was Boeing 727-256 of Iberia (EC-DDU) flown on approach to Bilbao airport, 30 kilometers away from the area where she slipped a broadcast antenna and thus a wing was demolished ( Controlled flight into terrain (CFIT ) ). None of the 148 people on board survived the accident (see also Iberia flight 610 ) .
- On February 7, 2001, a crashed Airbus A320-200 of Iberia (EC-HKJ) with 143 passengers on landing at the airport Bilbao. During the final approach, the aircraft got into severe turbulence and heavy winds, so that the pilots wanted to initiate a go-around maneuver. However, due to a concatenation of the various circumstances and a design error, the angle of attack protection system was activated. This prevented the pilots from pulling the machine up so that it crashed onto the runway at a rate of 6 m / s (1200 feet per minute), causing the nose landing gear to collapse and irreparable damage to the seven-month-old machine.
