history
The settlement of the area of Mondragón can be proven back to the Stone Age. The city is mentioned for the first time in the 13th century, after a number of cities were founded in the region when Gipuzkoa entered the Kingdom of Castile in 1200: in 1260 King Alfonso X of Castile gave the name of Mondragón and the town of Arrasate Fueros de Vitoria (special rights) granted.
In 1897 the Spanish Prime Minister Antonio Cánovas del Castillo was murdered by the Italian anarchist Michele Angiolillo in the spa complex of Santa Águeda de Gesalibar in Mondragón .
In the 20th century, the population increased significantly as part of industrialization.
On March 7, 2008, just two days before the Spanish parliamentary elections in 2008 , ETA terrorists shot and killed the local, former city councilor Isaías Carrasco .
