Azpeitia is a Spanish municipality in the autonomous province of Basque Country . It is part of the Guipuzcoa Province . It consists of seven formerly independent places, including the place Loyola , birthplace of Ignatius of Loyola , the founder of the Jesuit order .

The municipality, located at the foot of the Izaraitz massif and on the Urola river , has 14,936 inhabitants (2019).

economy

The most important economic sectors in the municipality are wood production and the wood processing industry, which can fall back on the local forests as a resource. In addition, there are metal processing companies and the exploitation of neighboring quarries. Agriculture, especially cattle breeding, primarily serves the local market.

Another important economic factor is tourism, especially the pilgrimages to the sanctuary and the birthplace of St. Ignatius in Loyola.

  • Santuario di Sant'Ignazio in Loyola. The complex, which consists of several baroque buildings and the house where Ignatius Loyola was born , is an important Catholic pilgrimage site.
