Pasaia ( Spanish Pasajes ) is a city in the province of Gipuzkoa in the Spanish part of the Basque Country .
It is 5 km east of Donostia-San Sebastián . The old, traditional fishing village draws its importance from the seaport located in the ria of the Oiartzun River .
In 1203 Pasaia is mentioned for the first time as Oiarso . In the course of Christianization at the end of the 15th century, it was mentioned as a pasage . The name is likely based on the winding, narrow, but seaworthy river mouth. It lies between the mountains of Monte Ulia and Monte Jaizkibel.
In 1770 Pasaia received city rights from King Charles IV .
Today Pasaia consists of four parts: Pasai Donibane (Spanish: Pasajes de San Juan ), Pasai San Pedro , Trintxerpe and Pasai Antxo with a total of 6.8 km².
The most important commercial port in the province of Gipuzkoa is an important employer for the almost 20,000 inhabitants. Pasaia forms the economic region of Oarsoaldea with the cities of Rentería , Oiartzun and Lezo .
Donibane is important for tourism with its fish restaurants.
