history
Origin of the Basque name
Important linguists such as Koldo Mitxelena and Julio Caro Baroja believe that the name Beasáin is derived from the medieval Basque name Beraxa, which is well documented. Koldo Mitxelena also cites as an example a medieval document in which a person named Berástegui calls himself Beraxa. Mitxelena suspects that the name is connected to the Basque word for soft, beraxa or beratza, and could therefore also be a special nickname.
The spelling of Beasain has varied over the past few centuries. In the 19th century, the Statistical Office of Spain ( INE ) listed Beasain in their official documents as Beásain and Beasáin. From 1897 onwards only the current form Beasain is mentioned in all censuses.
In Basque, however, the place is called Beasain, as there are no accents in the Basque language.
