Francisco Martín "Pako" Ayestarán Barandiarán (born February 5, 1963 in Beasain ) is a Spanish football coach .
Career
Ayestarán became the coach of Valencia CF in March 2016 . He began his coaching career in August 2000 as assistant coach of the CD Tenerife under the then coach Rafael Benitez . He followed this to other positions in Valencia and Liverpool FC . Ayestarán won two Spanish championships, one UEFA Cup winner and one European Super Cup winner as assistant coach at Valencia . At the Reds he won the English Cup once, the Champions League once and the European Supercup once. The Spaniard is seen as an astute tactician and mainly directed conditioning training at Liverpool FC.
After further positions as sporting director at Real Sociedad and assistant coach at Benfica Lisbon and again at Valencia, he took up his first head coach position at Estudiantes . This was followed by further positions at Tel Aviv and Santos Laguna before he returned to Valencia as assistant coach to Gary Neville , whose position he took over in March 2016. Ayestarán was released in September 2016. His successor is Salvador González Marco .
