Zumaia (official and Basque name, Spanish Zumaya ) is a city in the province of Gipuzkoa in the Spanish Autonomous Community of the Basque Country . It is located about 25 km west of the city of Donostia-San Sebastián .

geography

Zumaia is located in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. In the city is the confluence of the Urola in the Bay of Biscay .

The climate is maritime with moderate summers and mild winters.

geology

Zumaia is geologically interesting mainly because of the easily visible flysch . On the coast, the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary and the layers of the Paleocene (66.0–56.0 Ma ) and the Ypresian (Lower Eocene ) are exposed . The international reference profiles for the base of the Thanetium and the Seelandium have been located on the beach of Zumaia since 2008 .

history

The first written mention of the place comes from the year 1292. The railway accident of Zumaya in 1941 claimed 26 lives.

Attractions

One of the city's attractions is the Museo Ignacio Zuloaga , which exhibits works by El Greco and Francisco de Goya , among others . It is located in the house where the painter Ignacio Zuloaga (1870–1945) lived.

The Church of San Pedro was built in the Gothic style. It is located on the Camino de la Costa , the Way of St. James along the north coast of Spain.

The city is on the San Sebastian - Bilbao railway line .
