Azkoitia is a municipality in the Basque province of Gipuzkoa ( Spain ). With 11,633 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and 55.4 km², Azkoitia is one of the most important communities in the Comarca Urola-Costa.
geography
Azkoitia is at an altitude of 113 m above sea level. M. (community center) on the Urola River , about three kilometers west of Loyola , where the basilica of the same name and the birthplace of the founder of the Catholic Jesuit order Ignatius of Loyola is located. The place is surrounded in the north by the Izarraitz mountain range ( 1026 m ) and in the south by Mount Samiño ( 932 m ).
history
Azkoitia was first mentioned in documents in 1324, when the Castilian king Alfonso XI. awarded the town charter. Before the city was founded, the settlement area was called Iraurgi.
economy
Industrialization started late, but there was already a tradition in metal production. Therefore Azkoita is strongly influenced by the metal processing industry, which is partly reflected in the cityscape.
Sports
Azkoitia is known for a number of excellent players in the Basque pelota game. Atano III in particular , who dominated this sport like no other for over 20 years, is considered by many to be the best pelotari in history.
