from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

José María Nemesio Otaño y Eguino SJ (born December 19, 1880 in Azkoitia , † April 25, 1956 in Donostia-San Sebastián ) was a Basque musicologist and composer.

Life

Nemesio Otaño joined the Jesuit order as a novice at the age of 15 . His musical teachers included the composers Federico Olmeda , Vicente Goicoechea and Jacinto Ruiz Manzanares . Convinced of the need for church music reforms, Otaño organized the Primer Congreso Nacional de Música Sagrada in 1907 and founded the magazine Música Sacro-Hispana. The Schola Cantorum of the Pontifical University of Comillas , which he directed , became a model for choral schools at Spanish seminaries.

After the end of the Spanish civil war , he became head of the Madrid Conservatory in 1940 , where he also held a chair in folklore until his retirement in 1951. Due to his closeness to the Franco regime , he achieved a prominent position in the musical reconstruction of Spain in that era, which, however, only extended a little beyond his lifetime.

His collection forms the basis of the Nemesio Otaño music library of the Loyola Jesuit College , which has a collection of more than 120,000 books and scores .
